I think so too. More and more people seem to be accepting it for what it is and seeing its potential rather than focusing on what it doesn't do.

Scott Bourne said this on a follow-up post "most of the people bashing the iPad are people who really want a laptop. Well, buy a laptop." http://bit.ly/bpcb5C I thought it was pretty good.

Nah, I'm just excited, as you and many others are! It's funny to surf Digg and see all the tech people hating on the iPad and declare it a massive disappointment. Yes, we'd all like one machine that does absolutely everything, faster than anything else, and better, for cheaper than the cheapest alternative.

The iPad is no different from a tire iron or a bulldozer; I don't get mad at my tire iron because I can't milk a cow with it. Like the iPhone, I am way excited to see what ways people find to use the iPad to its potential.

I agree completely with your transformed portfolio statement.

Coming from a photographer's viewpoint, a laptop is too cumbersome and uninviting to easily share with a potential client you meet on the street or at the cafe. And an iPhone, which I have certainly used on the fly to land work with in the past, is too small - you end up looking like a dweeb with your nose in your phone.

The iPad, however, brings the best of both worlds: the speed and display size of a laptop combined with a drop-dead easy, intuitive interface and stylish presentation. Easy on the eyes and inviting for the viewer to look at and touch, which means your potential client spends more time admiring your work and enjoying the experience.

iPad = helluva first impression.

Thanks for your comment, niftysmith. You definitely have a good point about being able to convert your current MacBook into a ModBook, but for the same price as converting, you could buy a 64GB iPad without the 3G (and that's the ModBook sale price). I agree that no one using a ModBook or Cintiq would give it up for finger drawing, but I'm suggesting that IF someone, even Wacom, steps up and makes a great stylus, then you have a very comparable contender at a much more affordable price.

I think you're right about schools and education. These have incredible potential, especially with kids who like and need touch interaction. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a who line of kids learning games or presentation software showing up on the iPad.

Bottom line: as is, it's no ModBook/Wacom killer, but I believe it has the potential to be. :) Great feedback!

The iPad totally won't kill the Modbook. At all. The Modbook is a fully functional Macbook converted to a tablet/touch screen functionality. There is no way the iPad will kill sales of that since people can willingly convert their existing Macbooks into one. They're still more functional than the iPad considering a Modbook supports Flash, etc. The Cintiq has a very specific clientele, mostly in the animation/architectural world that will be virtually untouched by something you have to draw on with your finger.

What the iPad will revolutionize is schools—it should totally be marketed to the educational sector. If kids are already on laptops, why not switch to something like an iPad with a little less functionality but more Application potential? This could also be useful for other industrial sectors of work where people need specific Apps—inspectors, etc.

I think that you might be spot-on with online comics—there are so many webcomics out there who could benefit from this kind of technology. Apple can totally compete with eBooks and Kindles now, but they're not going to be making a dent in the pre-existing technology established by companies like Wacom and Modbook. Not yet.
